Bhang is a common drink that is enjoyed during Indian festivals such as Holi and the main ingredient that results in intoxicating effect after a tasty glass of bhang is cannabis otherwise known as marijuana. India’s medical use of Cannabis can be traced to around 700-AD. There have been never ending debates regarding the case of legalizing marijuana not just in India but all over the world. Though it is an illegal drug under federal law, some states in USA have legalized the use of small quantities of marijuana for medical purposes. In India, it is considered a narcotic and the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act makes use of marijuana aka ganja illegal.

Cannabis was used in ancient India, China and Greece for healing purposes. Since the drug is illegal, very less number of scientists is taking interest in studying the medical potential that this plant can have. Some FDA approved synthetic variants of a substance found in cannabis are being used for treatment of weight loss and to increase appetite. Though there are reports online that using marijuana can cure cancer, they have been proved to be hoaxes planted on the web to mislead people. On the other hand, variants of cannabis have been used to treat nausea among patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Some people use this for recreational purposes and there are quite some interesting facts that one has to know. Cannabis plants produce a group of chemicals called cannabinoids, which produce mental and physical effects when consumed. A person experiences high because of a chemical called Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) that is present in marijuana. Users experience heightened emotions, feelings, slowing down of time and never ending hunger. Studies have found that unfiltered cannabis could prove to be more dangerous than cigarettes and can cause a number of health issues. Cannabis also causes laughing sickness and is quite a powerful drug that can be harmful.

Minimum possession of marijuana is allowed in Colombia, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Jamaica, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Portugal, Spain, Uruguay, Colorado and Washington State in USA and some more countries are going to join the list soon.

Apart from this, people use it for help with pain and sleep. According to National Geographic Magazine, there is anecdotal evidence that some strains of cannabis can have strong anti-seizure effect. Doctors say the risk of addiction is high and use of marijuana can take a toll on a person’s memory and cognitive ability. Since its long term effects are unknown, more research is necessary and people ought to be careful in using cannabis for purposes other than medicine.
